Peter Atherton
Atherton came through the ranks at Wigan Athletic, starting up as a promising youngster, playing for the Wigan youth team. He made his senior debut in 1988 and soon established himself as a regular in the side during the 1989-90 season, he played for the Latics in either the Defence or midfield and his great play earned the play a move to Coventry City and then Sheffield Wednesday. At Wednesday he established himself as a leader in the side and was installed as the club captain. He later on had spells playing for Birmingham City, Bradford City and Halifax Town.
Phil Hughes
Phil Hughes took over from Nigel Adkins in goal for the Latics in a league encounter against Reading in October 1989 and he became a permanent fixture in the Wigan goal through out the 1989-90 season for the club, conceding 43 goals in 37 matches. He was signed by the club in the year 1987 and spent many years at Wigan Athletic football club, making an outstanding contribution at the club. |
