Alex Cribley
Cribley signed for Wigan Athletic in November 1980 and became a formidable force in his centre back position during his long spell at the club. Cribley spent seven years playing for Wigan, however in the year 1987, injury forced Cribley in to premature retirement. He captained the Latics during their amazing FA Cup run of 1987 as the club reached the quarter finals of the competition. He is currently a physiotherapist at the club.
Kevin Langley
Langley started his career off playing for the Latics in the year 1981 at the tender age of 17 years old. It was not until the 1982-83 season that Langley had established himself as a permanent fixture in the Wigan football team. He was outstanding in his midfield role for Wigan and helped the club during his five years playing for them. He went on to make 160 appearances for the club during what proved to be his first spell at the club. He later on had spells playing for Everton, Manchester City and Birmingham City before moving back to Wigan in the summer of 1990. Langley has played for the Latics on more than 350 occasions, one of the greatest players to have played for the club.
Mike Newell
After a short spell playing for Crewe, Newell joined Wigan Athletic in 1983 and made a real name for himself at the club during the 1984-85 campaign as he netted in 16 goals, which included a goal in the Freight Rover trophy final, a match that Wigan defeated Brentford to win the trophy. His outstanding play for the club over the next several years earned him a move to Luton Town. He made nearly 90 appearances for Wigan and scored an impressive 32 goals for the club. Newell spent two years with Luton before playing for Leicester City and Everton. H moved to Blackburn in 1991 and enjoyed a successful career with Rovers, helping the club win the league title during the 1994-95 season. He later on had spells playing for Aberdeen, Doncaster and Blackpool. |
