Jewell commenced his managerial carer at Bradford City and guided the club into premiership football as they were promoted from the first division at the end of the 1998-99 campaign. He kept them in the premiership during the 1999-2000 season. He left the club on a real high and was installed as the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday. One year later, Jewell was installed as the new manager of Division two football club, Wigan. He helped the club gain promotion to the first division at the end of the 2002-03 season and two years later he took the club into the premiership. He guided Wigan Athletic to a fantastic premiership campaign during the 2005-06 season and helped the club reach the Carling Cup final.
