Rioch started his managerial career with Torquay United before being installed in charge at Middlesbrough in 1986, a club he managed for four years. He later on managed Millwall for two seasons before managing Bolton, a club he helped promote in to the premier league and guided them to the league cup final in 1995. Rioch was installed as manger at Arsenal for the 96-97 campaign and brought David Bergkamp in to the side. He helped the Gunners reach the UEFA Cup and later on had spells managing QPR and Norwich. Rioch was installed as the new manage of Wigan Athletic for the 2000-01 campaign and he left the managerial post after seven months in charge, while Wigan were occupying a play off position.
