John Deehan

Deehan managed Wigan Athletic just after local millionaire David Whelan bought the club whilst the Latics were playing third division football. He guided Wigan Athletic to winning the third division championship by the end of the 1996-97 season. He helped keep Wigan up in the second division during the 97-98 season and then moved on to become assistant manager at Sheffield United. He later on became assistant manager to John Gregory at Aston Villa FC.

Ray Mathias

After enjoying a playing career with Tranmere Rovers and Wigan Athletic, Mathias was in charge at Wigan Athletic during the 1998-99 season and he took Wigan to the brink of promotion in to the first division as they reached the play off finals, only narrowly losing against Manchester city. Since then he had spells managing Tranmere Rovers during the 2002-03 season and later on was caretaker manager at Chester City.

Bruce Rioch

Rioch started his managerial career with Torquay United before being installed in charge at Middlesbrough in 1986, a club he managed for four years. He later on managed Millwall for two seasons before managing Bolton, a club he helped promote in to the premier league and guided them to the league cup final in 1995. Rioch was installed as manger at Arsenal for the 96-97 campaign and brought David Bergkamp in to the side. He helped the Gunners reach the UEFA Cup and later on had spells managing QPR and Norwich. Rioch was installed as the new manage of Wigan Athletic for the 2000-01 campaign and he left the managerial post after seven months in charge, while Wigan were occupying a play off position.

Paul Jewell

Jewell commenced his managerial carer at Bradford City and guided the club into premiership football as they were promoted from the first division at the end of the 1998-99 campaign. He kept them in the premiership during the 1999-2000 season. He left the club on a real high and was installed as the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday. One year later, Jewell was installed as the new manager of Division two football club, Wigan. He helped the club gain promotion to the first division at the end of the 2002-03 season and two years later he took the club into the premiership. He guided Wigan Athletic to a fantastic premiership campaign during the 2005-06 season and helped the club reach the Carling Cup final.
